It was Macri’s third win in as many years.Melbourne swimmer James Macri was back to claim his third consecutive Splash for Cash crown, while Bega swim coach Zoe Philipzen stamped her authority on the women’s division for the second time.

Macri said his family had been visiting the area each year for more than a decade, but started competing in the Wharf to Waves around four years ago.

A competitive pool swimmer at home, Macri made the podium on his first attempt, but has claimed the top spot for threeyearsrunning.

“I’m ecstatic with the win,” he said.

The 1200 metre 2016 Tathra Elders Real Estate ‘Splash For Cash’Macri stays pretty modest about his wins and doesn’t tell too many people when he gets home, but does share the good news with his swim club.

“I tell them, but I’m probably a bit quiet about it really,” Macri said.

“I used to swim very competitively, but now it’s more for me and my enjoyment.”

Meanwhile, Philipzen had claimed the event a few years ago, but has since had a baby and only just recently found any time to squeeze in training.

She said her and husband Mark had been heading into town at 5.30am to complete two-kilometre swims twice a week, but had the chance to ramp up her training recently.

“For the last month I’ve been lucky to have my sister as a baby sitter, so we’ve been hammering early morning swims,” Philipzen said with a laugh.

“The 1200 felt awesome and I didn’t expect that result at all.”

She also nailed her 600m age group swim, but said she had given everything in a sprint for the line.

“In the 600 you just give it all straight up, where you’re a bit more reserved in the 1200 and then dash the final bit,” Philipzen said.

The pair each won $500 in cash, a custom made medallion and a unique piece of art to commemorate their win.
