Squiers claims first Qualifying Series win

Emerging Wollongong surfer Nic Squiers claimed a breakthrough win taking out the first event of the World Surf LeagueAustralasia Qualifying Series at Maroubra Beach.

The Corrimal surfer beat top seed Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head) in his heat and ruled the two to three foot waves in the final against Cronulla’s Connor O’Leary to claim the Carve Pro QS1000.

t hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Squiers said.

“I have a young boy and a surf school that I run at home so juggling that with trying to compete is really tough to get a good result.

‘’I just tried to have fun and enjoy myself the entire event and before I knew it I was in the final. Then all of a sudden the hooter went an I had won. I’m pretty pumped.”

The Carve Pro forms the first of four QS1000 competitions on the NSW Pro Surf Series and serves as a replacement to the Carve Pro Junior, which ran at Maroubra over the last two years.

The next stop on the Australasia Qualifying Series is the Burleigh Pro presented by Bruce Lynton Land Rover and will run from January 29-31

In the mens final, Squiers showed his incredible power on his opening wave, throwing down a number of hacks and a solid closeout manoeuvre to post an excellent score of 8.50 (out of a possible 10 points).

Squiers backed it up with a 7.25 leaving O’Leary chasing a 7.76 for the remainder of the final. Coming close with a 7.20, O’Leary just missed out on the win, but Squires was rapt to claim the first QS win of his career.
