Roosters start AFL season at home

THE Singleton Roosters will kick off their 2016 Black Diamond AFL season with two home fixtures.

The Roosters, who have been intraining for the past month or two, face neighbouring Maitland in all three grades at Rose Point Park – first (2pm) and second (noon) division, and women’s (10.30am) – on Saturday, April 2.

They’ll then tackle Newcastle City in first division and women’s, while the“seconds” lock horns with The Entrance Bateau Bay, on April 9.

The Roosters’ maiden “away” encounter is scheduled for Saturday, April 16.

The 2016 draw was completed inconsultation with the clubs – andBDAFL football operations manager Garry Burkinshaw is pleased with the result.

“With a divisional-ised competition, all clubs are inconvenienced through teams being split on given game days,” he said.

“This season’s fixture, however, has minimised these splits and theclubs should be congratulated on their assistance during the process.

“The Black Diamond Cup will consist of six teams; first division – 10 teams, second division – 11 teams and women’s – 10 teams.

“Black Diamond Cup and first division competitions will comprise of 17 rounds with second division and women’s both contesting 16 rounds.

“All grades will kick off on April 2; with the women’s grand final on August 27 and the men’s decider on September 3.”

Burkinshaw said other highlights included:

All competitions will have a final four except second division, which will operate a final five;

All matches will be scheduled for Saturday;

Wet weather rounds have beenscheduled for April 23, June 11 and July 16;

Newcastle City and Terrigal Avoca will play at No 1 Sportsground after the NEAFL match on July 16. No other matches have been scheduled for that weekend; and

A general bye is scheduled forthe Black Diamond Cup for June 11 to coincide with representative matches.
