Pursuit ends in Moree’s Mehi river

POLICE were able to keep cool in Moree on Wednesday after a foot pursuit ended in an unexpected swim in the local river.

About 1pm on Wednesday, Moree officers stopped a vehicle on Edward Street for a random traffic stop.

Checks of the driver and occupants found the rear seat passenger had a number of outstanding warrants out for his arrest.

The male attempted to lock police out of the vehicle before fleeing on foot towards the Mehi River.

Police gave chase but the man swam into the river to evade officers.

Battling scorching temperatures into the early forties, two keen officers didn’t hesitate and dived into the water, as backup was called in to surround the riverbank.

The man was caught in the water by the swimming officers and was taken to the riverbank where further police assisted in his arrest.

The 18-year-old man was then transported to Moree Police Station without any trouble and was charged with six outstanding warrants as well as one count of resisting police.

Following investigations, officers later arrested a 39-year-old man who was also wanted on warrants in Arunga Street.

Both men were bail refused and are due to appear at bail court on Thursday.
