Prostate group provides support

LIGHT LUNCH: Support group members Elly and Geoff Noller, Mervyn Fox and Ron and Elfriede Wilksch with guest speaker Gay Corbett at the group’s November meeting. ARARAT’S prostate cancer support group meets on the third Wednesday of every second month.

Spokesman Mervyn Fox said the group was an informal gathering open to all where people could come along andask questions about cancer and cancer support or simply listen and find out what services were available in the Ararat and wider Grampians area.

“It’s an opportunity for people to learn more about the disease before they are forced intomaking anybig decisions,” Mr Fox said.

“If you’ve got a history of prostate cancer in your family or you’re just curious, come along. Everybody’s welcome.”

The group meets for a light lunch at the Ararat RSL and often invites a guest speaker.

“We’re in contact with a lot of health experts and a lot of other support groups,” Mr Fox said.

“Our guest speakers are always very knowledgeable and up-to-date with the latest practices and support networks.”

Mr Fox said the meetings, while not anonymous, were a safe and discrete environment where people could feel comfortable about opening up.

“It’s an informal setting, but nothing that is said goes outside the meeting,” he said.

“We normally have about 15 to 20 people for lunch and there’s a broad range, from carers andpartners to sufferers.”

The Ararat prostate support group will meet at the Ararat RSL on Wednesday, January 20 from midday.
