Police to launch Operation Amity

Police will be out in force for Operation Amity for the Australia Day weekend.WIMMERA drivers will be put on notice for the Australia Day long weekend.

Police will run Operation Amity from January 22 to 26.

Horsham police traffic adviser Senior Sergeant Guin Cleminson said the operation was a statewide initiative.

“Between 2011-2015 there were 15 fatalities and 259 serious injury collisions during the Australia Day weekend,” she said.

“One person was killed and 136 were injured over the Australia Day long weekend last year.

“Over the Australia Day long weekend last yearthere were 15 people seriously injured across Western Region–threein the Wimmera.

“Throughout the month of January last year, eightpeople lost their lives on our roads across the Western Region.

“Our aim is for zero deaths and zero serious injuries – police can’t do this alone, we need community attitudes and behaviours to change.

Shesaid police would be out in force over the weekend, with an increased police presence and an increase in drug and alcohol testing.

“There will be an increase of people taking the opportunity of getting away and catching up, so there will be an increased amount of people in the area,” she said.

Sen Sgt Cleminson said the operation would be focused around low level drink driving and distraction.

Shewarned motoristsa number of factors caused distraction.

“Mobile phones, other passengers, your navigation system or your radio are the main things,” she said.

She encouraged people to also monitor fatigue over the weekend.

“When you’re fatigued your reaction time is slower,” she said.

“It’s important to plan your trip andhave regular breaks.”

Sen Sgt Cleminson urged people to think about the consequences to driving distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Look after yourself and look after one another,” she said.

“A split second poor decision could have life long effects.

“If you don’t think you should be on the road don’t risk it.”
