Newcastle retains Shield

The Newcastle District Men’s Representative Team has commenced its 2016 campaign in outstanding style with a three tests to nil victory over the ACT last weekend at Nelson Bay Bowling Club to retain the Challenge Shield.

Newcastle enjoyed success on five of the six rinks in its 114-100 First Test win.The under 25 quartet of Shaun Richards (Raymond Terrace), Haydn Bojkowski (Raymond Terrace), Joel Roche (Belmont) andJakob Graham (Nelson Bay) had the biggest win with 24-13 over Michael McQueen. Matt Baus (Raymond Terrace) scored oneshot on the last end to edge out Robbie Chesher 15-14.Terry Antram (Soldiers Point) lead all the waydefeating Andrew Howie 20-14, Shannon Gittoes (Nelson Bay) recovered from a 12-11 deficit after 15 ends to beat Peter Watts 22-17, andWayne Lambourne (Windale-Gateshead) accounted for Kevin Deeves 23-19.

WINNER: Jakob Graham (Nelson Bay) skippered his under 25 side to three impressive victories against the ACT.

In a high scoring Second Test, Newcastle won131-102 despite rink wins being fourto twoin Newcastle’s favour.Graham’s side again lead the way defeating McQueen 29-12.Lambourne downed Deeves 27-13, Antram beat Watts 22-17 andBaus accounted for Ashlin 19-11.

Newcastle again triumphedin the Third Test winning 127-101. Graham completed a good weekend scoring 10 shots on the last fiveends to beat McQueen 24-17.

TROPHY LOSSThe Newcastle District Women’s Representative Team lost the Perpetual Trophy to the ACT, when they were beaten two tests to one. Newcastle won the First Test 79-71, with Vacie McIntyre (Soldiers Point) and Merka Weddell (Heaton-Birmingham Gardens) being the successful skippers.They lost a thrilling Second Test by oneshot 75-74 and were convincingly beaten 89-67 in the Third and deciding Test.

BAUS PLAYSSTATERaymond Terrace’s Matthew Baus is a member of the NSW State Side that plays Victoria in its annual match at Mulgrave Country Club, Victoria on Wednesday and Thursday. Baus will play third for Aron Sherriff (Ettalong Memorial), with Matt Miles (Engadine) as lead andAaron Teys (Warilla) as second.

NDBA MEETINGThe NDBA Match Committee meet on Tuesday to carry out the 2016 Saturday and mid-week pennant sectional draws. Full details will be provided to club delegates at Thursday evening’s Management Committee Meeting.

MID-SUMMER WINS Daryl Price and Jamie Lawrence (Raymond Terrace) combined with Pat Barwick (Windale-Gateshead) to win the Stockton mid-Summer 3 Bowl Triples with twowins plus 30 shots, with the host clubs’ Col Firkin, John Price andRick Clark being runners-up with twowins plus 25 shots.
