Looking to the future: Zoey has a passion for pets

Future career: Zoey Antoniou, 10, with her dog Portia, spent her school holidays at a camp where she learnt what vets do. Picture: Jane DysonZOEY Antoniou is only 10 but she knows exactly what she wants to do for a job one day.

During the summer break, Zoey, of Sans Souci, participated in a summer holiday camp where she learnt about taking care of animals.

Zoey was involved in the week-long Future Vet Kids Camp program this month, held at Waverley College’s junior school.

The program was aimed at children who were fascinated by animals, or had an interest in becoming a vet.

Zoey has a chihuahua named Portia, 14, who requires special care and daily medication for her arthritis.

She is responsible for giving Portia her daily medication and accompanies her on to visits to the vet.

Zoey also walks and brushes her.

The camp gave children the chance to get close with furry and fuzzy creatures.

Instructors and animal handlers also promoted responsible pet ownership and an introduction to veterinary medicine.

There were talks by animal behaviorists and staff from animal rescue, and children also learnt about wildlife conservation, breed specific diseases and pet nutrition.
