NSW Shadow Minister for Corrections Guy Zangari has called for Google to blur aerial photographs of sensitive sites, such as Cessnock Correctional Centre.

According to the shadow minister, the images of prison layouts can be accessed with ease from any computer, tablet or smart phone.

Mr Zangari claimedGoogle Maps can be used to measure the distance from the nearest road to the inside of an exercise yard and provide enough information to smuggle in contraband.

In some cases the maps show the trees in the exercise yard, where contraband that is slingshot or thrown into the prison could remain undetected.

Mr Zangari has called for the state government to follow the lead of countries such as Ireland and request all images of NSW prisons be blurred out on Google Maps.

“Blurring out the detailed pictures of NSW Prisons is a common sense step to make our prisons safer and more secure,” he said.

“It’s astounding that common sense simple measures like this aren’t being implemented to keep prisoners inside and contraband outside the walls.”
