Don to help celebrate

Mr Hyde has had a long careerin marketing, advertising, publishing and the mass media and for almost 40 years was afootball commentator on both radio and television.

In 2006 he was inducted into the Melbourne Cricket Ground’smedia hall of fame and in 2007 he was awarded life membership of the Australian Football Media Association.

Mr Hyde was chairman of the Australia Day Committee in Victoria for seven years from 1992 to 1999 and was also a board member of the National Australia Day Council.

He is a life ambassador for Australia Day andhas visited locations including Maryborough, Carisbrook, Echuca, Heathcote, Mia Mia, Numurkah, Nathalia, Hampton Park, Cohuna, Leitchville, Sorrento, Ballarat and Bairnsdale.

Mr Hyde is also an author.

He co-wrote the book Beyond the Call –which looks at the great commentators of Australian football.

A former chairman of the Order of Australia Associationin Victoria, Mr Hyde is a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne.

In 2008 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

“It is a great pleasure to have Don Hyde as Ararat’s ambassador for our annualAustralia Day celebrations,” Ararat Rural City mayor Paul Hooper said.

Ararat’s Australia Day ceremony is atAlexandra Gardens.

The festivities startat 8.30am with a complimentary breakfast prepared by the AraratLions Club.

The Ararat City Band will keep the crowd entertained prior to the official opening and welcome by the mayor.

Each year Ararat Rural City Council presents awards to local citizens and groups that have made an outstanding contributionto the community.

The awards recognise citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, community event of the yearand community service of the year.

The Sing Australia Choir will perform the national anthem and the 2nd Ararat Scout Group will conduct a flag raising ceremony.

The celebrations in Alexandra Gardens will also include acitizenship ceremony.
