Dolphins thrive after player losses

Dolphins coach John Coombes

In the men’s water polo, the Dolphins endured a tough player cull in the off season, losing a team’s worth of players from A and B grades.

The A grade team had intended to split and form another side to even out the competition, however their plans fell by the wayside.

“How do you split up a core of six players?”Dolphins coach John Coombes said.

Coombes recruited a few uni students, who have gelled well; the Dolphins are undefeated 12 rounds into the A grade competition.

“We’re loving it,it’s been a team effort, from full back to centre forward, everyone’s done their job,” Coombes said, who couldn’t single out any star players.

The Dolphins had a comprehensive victory over the Raiders last week despite having a couple of players away on holidays.

“We’ve got a lot of depth with a couple of Bgrade sides and a heap of juniors,” Coombes said.

The juniors relished the chance to work alongside core A grade players.

The Dolphinswill loseChris Coombes from their strong back lineas he returns to Darwin in a week’s time.

The Octopuses face the Raiders on Tuesday following a 6-5 win last week.

Octopuses coach Dave Barrett anticipates another“arm-wrestle” with the Raiders, their closest competitors.

Raiders coach Alan De Jong would like to see more vigour upfront from the team who arestill chasing their first win.
