Beer flows again at the Vic

OLD-FASHIONED: Victoria Hotel owner Michael Foster said the recently re-opened pub was consciously staying true to its roots as a classic pub. Picture: Matt NealTHE re-opening of Warrnambool’s Victoria Hotel will ensure the pub’s111years of history continues.

The historic venue went into receivership and closed its doors suddenly in August last year, but was back in businesson January 2, with owner Michael Foster attributing the hold-up to the need to re-apply for the appropriate licences.

“It took until the end of December to get all the licences in place,” he said.

“We also wanted to give it a bit of a facelift.”

The “facelift” is little more than improved lighting, a new bar, and a lick of paint, Mr Foster said.

“We didn’t want to go all ‘yuppie’ on it –we just wanted to run a pub,” he said.

“It’s a bit old-fashioned.”

The bottleshop has also re-opened, the menu is pretty much the same, and the regulars have returned to their usual spots at the bar, Mr Foster said.

The Victoria Hotel was established in 1905 and along with the Royal Hotel is one of the last “old-school” pubs left in Warrnambool.
